  • Why Did Lithium-Ion (Especially LFP) Become the Mainstream Battery?

Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) has become the dominant chemistry for stationary storage. Three reasons explain why.

① Higher thermal-runaway threshold — safer

LFP has a high thermal-runaway temperature, so it is far less likely to catch fire or explode than ternary (NCM) lithium. For residential and commercial installations this safety margin is decisive.

② Long cycle life

LFP typically delivers 6,000+ cycles, and can reach 8,000–10,000 cycles. That matches the 10–15-year lifetime expected of a home PV + storage system.

③ Cobalt- and nickel-free — lower cost

LFP uses no cobalt or nickel — no precious-metal supply risk, a lower raw-material cost, and excellent value for money.

Together these give LFP the best balance of safety, lifetime and cost for stationary energy storage.
