  • Does an ESS Cabinet Need an STS? How to Choose Between STS and ATS

First: not every energy-storage cabinet must carry an STS (Static Transfer Switch). But any load that cannot tolerate a power interruption absolutely needs one.

Which loads need an STS?

Automation production lines, precision manufacturing, inspection/test equipment and data centres: the moment power drops, these machines stop — causing scrapped parts, data loss or equipment damage. For these, seamless transfer is non-negotiable.

STS — millisecond, no-feel transfer

An STS is a static transfer switch. Its core value is millisecond-level, no-feel switching: when the grid dips, flickers or sags, it switches instantly to storage power, so equipment never stops or reboots. It also continuously monitors both power sources and coordinates seamlessly with the storage system.

ATS — mechanical, brief outage

An ATS is a mechanical switch with a transfer time from hundreds of milliseconds to a few seconds — a brief outage. It suits loads that tolerate a short interruption: lighting, HVAC, fans and fire-protection equipment in ordinary plants.

How to choose

  • Load must run through any disturbance → choose STS.
  • Load tolerates a short blink and cost matters → ATS is enough.
