A home (residential) energy storage system is built from three main parts.
(1) Storage battery — usually a LiFePO₄ (LFP) battery
Inside are the cells and the BMS (Battery Management System). The cells store the energy; the BMS monitors voltage, current and temperature, and keeps the pack safe and balanced.
(2) Hybrid inverter
The hybrid inverter handles AC/DC conversion: it charges the battery from PV or the grid, and converts stored DC back to AC to power the home, so PV, battery, grid and load all work together.
(3) EMS (Energy Management System) + supporting devices
The EMS — nowadays mostly a cloud platform + mobile app — makes the decisions: when to charge, when to discharge, when to draw from the grid. Supporting devices include a smart meter or CT (current transformer), a distribution box, and related protection hardware.
